On behalf of the Municipality of Budapest, the Budapest History Museum – Budapest Gallery and the 1646 Experimental Art Space in The Hague jointly announce a call for artists and curators living and working in Budapest for the year 2023, for creative, professional and artistic networking opportunities.
Residency period: 15 June – 15 July 2023
The 1646 Experimental Art Space will provide the winning applicant:
-fully equipped accomodation and studio in the center of The Hague, nearby the 1646 Experimental Art Space
-Specification of budget provided: €500 incl. VAT. Artist fee, €1000 incl. VAT. Production budget, €300 incl. VAT. Traveling expense
-professional support as required and a public event at the end of the residency, the shape of which can be worked out in conversation with 1646
Application requirements:
Applications are invited from those who have won this competition up to once and travelled before 2020. The 1646 and BTM – Budapest Gallery also expect applicants who can speak English and/or Dutch at an adequate level about their work and professional issues. Please declare your language skills responsibly on the registration form.
You should also declare any study trips abroad that you have been awarded a scholarship for 2022-2023. This is not a disqualification, it is purely for information. We expect a written professional report, including photos, from the successful applicant after the trip abroad. Participants are asked to occasionally support the Budapest Gallery’s artist exchange programme, so that foreign artists coming to Budapest can get a better understanding of the capital’s art scene and future domestic applicants can get a more complete picture of the exchange programme.

The application must include:
– a registration form and a declaration of consent to personal data processing, which can be downloaded at the bottom of the page
– a curriculum vitae and work portfolio in one PDF file
– and a cover letter of up to 2-2 thousand characters in Hungarian and English
Applications will be judged by a professional jury invited by the Budapest Gallery. The jury will select a shortlist from which the host institution will choose the winner.
The jury for the 2023 artist exchange competition will be composed of Balázs Fodor, Júlia Hermann, Judit Szalipszki
