For residencies in foreign studios for the year 2024.

On behalf of the Municipality of Budapest, the Budapest Historical Museum – Budapest Gallery invites applications from artists (curators for certain locations) living and working in the capital for the year 2024 for creative, professional and artistic networking opportunities in the following locations:

Celje – Center for Contemporary Arts Celje: 2 months from May to June(1 artist – the winner will be selected from a shortlist of 3 names by a jury of the host institution)
Freising – Schafhof-Europaisches Künstlerhaus Oberbayern: 2 months from March to April (1 artist – the winner will be selected from a shortlist of 3 names by a jury of the host institution)
Krems – AIR Niederössterreich: March (1 artist)
Lisbon – Cámara Municipal de Lisboa: June, July (1-1 artist)
Salzburg – Land: February, March (1-1 artist)
Salzburg – Stadt: March (1 artist)
Strasbourg – CEAAC: April (1 artist – shortlist of 3 names to be selected by the jury of the host institution)
Paris – Cité International des Arts: September to October, 2 months (1 artist – the winner will be selected by the jury of the host institution from a shortlist of 3 names)
Reykjavík – SÍM Residency: June (1 artist – the winner will be selected by the jury of the host institution from a shortlist of 3-5 names)
Regensburg – Donumenta Artist in Residence: August (1 artist – the winner will be selected by the jury of the host institution from a shortlist of three names)

Curators are invited to apply in Lisbon, Strasbourg, Celje

On winning the competition, the outgoing applicant will receive accommodation, studio space and per diem from the host city. The conditions for outgoing applicants will be regulated individually at the request of the partner cities.

Application criteria:

Applications are invited from those who have won this competition no more than once and have travelled before 2020. Both the partner cities and Budapest expect applicants to be able to speak English or the language of the country in which they are applying at an appropriate level of competence in the job and in professional matters. Please declare your language skills responsibly on the registration form.

You must also declare which study trips abroad were made possible in 2022-2023 with a state scholarship. This is not a disqualification, it is purely for information. Winners are expected to submit a written professional report with photos after the trip abroad. Participants are asked to occasionally support the Budapest Gallery’s artist exchange programme, so that foreign artists coming to Budapest can get a better understanding of the capital’s art scene and future domestic applicants can get a more complete picture of the exchange programme.

The application must include:
– a registration form and a consent form, which can be downloaded at the bottom of the page
– a CV and a curriculum vitae, together with a summary of your professional experience in a single PDF file
– a project or research plan of up to 1 page in Hungarian and English for applications to Reykjavík, Strasbourg, Celje, Krems
– and a motivation letter in Hungarian and English, of a maximum of 2-2 thousand characters

If you are applying for more than one position, please attach a separate cover letter and project plan for each position, clearly indicating the names of the files.

The members of the jury for the 2024 artist exchange competition are Júlia Hermann, Krisztián Kukla, Fanni Solymár, Krisztián Török and Anna Zsoldos.

Deadline for the evaluation of the competition: end of November.
