Night of Museums at the Imre Varga Collection
June 21, 2025, 4-11 p.m.
4-6 p.m. Where did the head of the Radnoti statue go?
Creative workshop by Dorottya Poór, artist and art teacher
Imagine this: one morning, Imre Varga woke up from a strange dream. In it, his sculptures had conspired together and secretly switched places in the garden during the night! Radnóti’s head had vanished, other figures appeared in bizarre poses—it was complete chaos! Now it’s your turn to restore order—or stir up even more mischief! You can reimagine the sculptures, or mix them up and create funny collages to print on your very own custom-designed canvas bag. The ink dries quickly, so you can continue your adventure on Night of Museums with your unique creation proudly slung over your shoulder!
7:30 p.m. – 8 p.m. Sculpture and Humour in the Socialist Era – the Art of Imre Varga
Guided tour with Dr. Péter Schmidt, professional director of the Imre Varga Collection (in English)
In 2023, we celebrated the 100th anniversary of the birth of Imre Varga (1923–2019), a sculptor awarded the Kossuth Prize. On this occasion, his exhibited oeuvre was reinterpreted, and previously unknown study drawings and photographs from his estate were added — with the aim of presenting his creative process. This raises the question: how did the master relate to the historical figures or events for which he was commissioned to create statues? To what extent did his personal, subjective approach reflect in each work? The aim of this guided tour is to focus on Imre Varga’s sense of humor as it appears — either openly or subtly — in his artworks.
