50% family discount to visit our museum
One or two accompanying adults who are citizens of the European Economic Area (EEA) are eligible for a 50% discount when visiting with at least two children under the age of 18 who are close family members.The accompanying adult(s) can purchase their admission tickets at a 50% discount. Children aged 6–18 can purchase student tickets upon presentation of a valid student ID.
The persons listed below can visit the institutions of BHM free of charge (regardless of nationality):
a.) Children under the age of 6
b.) Persons with disabilities and one accompanying person per eligible visitor
• holders of a valid photo ID card issued by the National Association of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (Siketek és Nagyothallók Országos Szövetsége – SINOSZ);
• holders of a valid membership card issued by the Hungarian Association of Cochlear Implant Users (Magyar Cochleáris Implantáltak Egyesülete – MACIE), together with a valid photo identification document;
• holders of a valid photo ID card issued by the Hungarian Federation of the Blind and Partially Sighted (Magyar Vakok és Gyengénlátók Országos Szövetsége – MVGYOSZ);
• holders of a valid photo ID card issued by the National Federation of Associations of Persons with Physical Disabilities (Mozgáskorlátozottak Egyesületeinek Országos Szövetsége – MEOSZ);
• members with disabilities holding a membership card issued by the Hungarian Association for Persons with Intellectual Disabilities and Their Supporters (Értelmi Fogyatékossággal Élők és Segítőik Országos Érdekvédelmi Szövetsége – ÉFOÉSZ), together with proof of identity. This concession does not apply to supporting members;
• holders of a card issued by the National Autism Association (Autisták Országos Szövetsége – AOSZ);
• holders of any other document clearly stating one of the disabilities listed above, together with proof of identity.
c.) Holders of a valid professional admission pass issued by the Minister
d.) Holders of a valid Budapest Card can visit the Castle Museum, Kiscell Museum, Aquincum Museum, Budapest Gallery’s Lajos Street Exhibition Hall and the Imre Varga Collection free of charge.
e.) Students and teaching staff of educational institutions with which the Budapest History Museum (BTM) has a valid cooperation agreement aimed at incorporating cultural heritage into their educational programmes.
f.) Teaching staff and students of the Institute of Art History, Faculty of Humanities, Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE BTK) can visit permanent exhibitions free of charge and temporary exhibitions with a 75% discount. The discount can only be used if the student or member of teaching staff presents the signed document “Certificate for Students Participating in Higher Education Art Programmes to Apply for Discounted Admission” at the museum ticket desk, together with a photo student ID valid for the current semester or a valid photo identification document.
g.) Teaching staff and students of the Institute for Art Theory and Media Studies, Faculty of Humanities, Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE BTK) can visit permanent and temporary exhibitions free of charge. Free admission can only be used if the student or member of teaching staff presents the signed document “Certificate for Students Participating in Higher Education Art Programmes to Apply for Discounted Admission” at the museum ticket desk, together with a photo student ID valid for the current semester or a valid photo identification document.
h.) Teaching staff and students of the Hungarian University of Fine Arts can visit permanent and temporary exhibitions free of charge. Free admission can only be used if the student or member of teaching staff presents the signed document “Certificate for Students Participating in Higher Education Art Programmes to Apply for Discounted Admission” at the museum ticket desk, together with a photo student ID valid for the current semester or a valid photo identification document.
i.) Teachers, researchers, lecturers, staff and students of the Institute of History, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Károli Gáspár University of the Reformed Church in Hungary can visit BTM member institutions and exhibitions free of charge upon proof of their status.
Free entry for domestic and foreign citizens if:
a.) they are EEA citizens 70 years or older
b.) teachers working in public education (EEA citizens), and persons holding a teachers’ ID card issued in an EEA
member state
Free entry (regardless of nationality):
a.) for persons under the age of 26 or for up to 2 close relatives accompanying children under 18 on the last Saturdays of
every month
b.) for every visitors on the national holidays of Hungary (15 March, 20 August, 23 October)

For citizens living in the 3rd District with a permanent residence, for children from the Kindergartens operating in the jurisdiction of the municipality and the teachers accompanying them, for children from primary and secondary schools operating in the jurisdiction of the municipality and the teachers accompanying them in the Óbuda-based institutions of the BHM: the Aquincum Museum, the Budapest Gallery, the Imre Varga Collection, the Kiscell Museum, the Hercules villa, to visit the permanent and temporary exhibitions, and to attend musempedagogy prorammes organized for child groups.
Certificates or cards entitling for free entry (validated for the given year):
– BHM members,
– ICOM card,
– national or international Press Card,
– KKDSZ certificate, SZAKMA certificate,
– Tourist Guide certificate, in case of arriving with a group to the Castle Museum, the Kiscell Museum, the Budapest Gallery, the Imre Varga Collection, the Aquincum Museum,
– AICA and FKSE certificate to the Kiscell Museum, the Budapest Gallery and the Imre Varga Collection
In other cases, not listed above, or due to individual assesments or requests to the general director of the BHM or the director of the given institution, the general director of BHM can provide discounted or free entry. The individual discounts can not be combined! To access discounts, eligibility must be communicated before purchasing the tickets, and upon request – in every case – must be proven. Besides the certificates/cards listed above that does not contain photograph, proof of identity is required. The entrance fees and discounts indicated in this instruction apply to viewing the museum’s permanent and temporary exhibitions. During events the entrance fees apply as announced for the specific program.
In all other cases not listed above, discounted or free admission may be granted on an individual basis by the Director General of BTM, upon the recommendation of the director of the respective institution. Requests should be addressed to the Director General of BTM or to the director of the respective institution.
Discounts cannot be combined. To claim a discount, visitors must inform the ticket desk of their eligibility before purchasing their ticket and provide proof of eligibility upon request. For any of the documents listed above that do not include a photograph, a valid photo identification document must also be presented.
The admission fees and discounts listed above apply to the museum’s permanent and temporary exhibitions. For museum events and programmes, the admission fees and discounts specified for each individual event apply.
